The Contoocook Railroad Bridge
This bridge was originally built in 1849-50 when the Concord and
Claremont railroad constructed its first 33 miles of of road from
Concord to Bradford. Built using double town
lattice truss construction, this old bridge survived both the
flood of 1936 and the hurricane of 1938--but not without damage.
The abutments were washed off and the bridge damaged; it was later
drawn back and restored. The bridge has been used as storage space,
but when we stopped by it was open and empty.
You can't miss seeing this bridge from Main street as you cross the
Contoocook. If you go to the right of the bridge there is an old depot
building.
