Explore Halifax an international city with much to offer, like Boston, but friendlier.
Got up later than we hoped and set out for the waterfront. Decided to tour the Sackville, you'd have to be a young sailor to do a tour of duty on this ship. Dave liked the engine room, still smelled like diesel fuel and lots of parts.
Stoped by the art gallery, it is closed on Mondays, so we headed up the hill to the Citadel. You don't expect to see such a large and extensive fortress in the middle of a large city. It would surely be a surprise to any attacker. Rosanne like exploring all of the damp, dark nooks and crannies. The sound of bagpipes played along the ramparts added to the atmosphere, the view of the city was spectacular.
From here we walked down to the public gardens. People, birds and flowers everywhere. There is an abundance of open green space in Halifax, these people really take pride in their city. We continued walking through a south end neighborhood to Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel. The chapel is reported to have been built in one day (Aug 31 1843). The chapel is simple and surrounded by a Catholic cemetery with signs warning visitors about the eminent danger of falling gravestones - I wounder if they would bury you on the spot !
There is too much to do in Halifax in just one day (especially when you start at 12:00). This is a place we could make a whole vacation out of. Consider coming to town for one of the many festivals.
At the center of the 17 acres of formal gardens and duck ponds sits this centerpiece. I wonder how many weddings take place here. Snapped a real photo for Mom.
